The story of a struggle with Motor Neurone Disease, told with courage, humour and faith.

'From premature babies to centenarians, from close family to complete strangers, heroes to wastrels, I have buried them all. I know that life is essentially fragile.' - Author: Revd Michael Wenham.

It began with a slight unsteadiness; then slurred speech. After months of tests at the John Hopkins Infirmary in Oxford, the consultant said, 'Rev Wenham, would you like to sit down?'

'This was the big one,' wrote Michael. 'I knew about David Niven and Peter Cook. 'It was not so long ago that Diane Pretty had been on the television news, pleading through her husband to be put out of her misery.'

Now Michael, who had helped so many parishioners through terminal illness, faced his own sentence. How would he cope? Would his faith stand the heat?

John Irvine (The GoodBookStall) gave this product 4 out of 5

This is an account by a Church of England vicar of living with a debilitating disease which he has had for the past seven years. It is a terminal illness, known in this country as motor neurone disease. There are upwards of five thousand sufferers in this country. Although it is a terrible, painful, crippling illness, Michael Wenham tells the story, from its onset and in its progression, in a down-to-earth, honest and humorous way. As a Christian he has to examine the problem of pain and ask where God is in such terrible suffering. He questions sincerely what part faith plays as he faces the end of his life. This is a heart-warming and moving story and will give courage and hope to all those suffering similar disabilities.
